For over 150 years, rock stars and viscounts alike have called the Chelsea their own. First forged by Queen Victoria’s private cobbler, this revolutionary “elastic ankle boot” was designed to take the most in-demand dandies from full-gallop in stirrups to parqueted literary salons without breaking their stride. In the swinging 60s, the horse became a motorcycle and the destination was an underground club in London’s Chelsea district, but the essential versatility was unchanged. The Chelsea is a boot for every scene and every century.
We searched far and wide for a boot embodying the Chelsea’s essential sophistication and durability. When we couldn’t find one, we decided to make our own. The stunning crepe sole is tough enough for your most daring adventures, and its layered construction makes for a vibrant profile — especially beneath an upper as slick as Marcello Mastroianni in a downpour.
Superior build and design are what we do, and the Chelsea is no exception. The rounded toeline and medium-height toe box are precisely shaped to match any outfit in your wardrobe.
The feature that makes the Chelsea boot is the elasticized gore at the ankle. This makes the Chelsea the easiest boot to put on an take off, and a huge part of what makes ours so compulsively wearable. After a few days, lacing up your other boots will feels like an unnecessary chore.
The crepe soles offer several special advantages: long wear, greater comfort, and all weather durability. Its layered construction provides a stunning scale of rich tan tones along the midsole. This makes for a minimal chromatic palate beneath sand suede, or a brilliant contrast with Couro Chromo Steerhide.
Like goodyear welting, Blake Rapid calls for an extra midsole to which the insole and outsole are each separately stitched. Wet weather will have a hell of time finding its way in. Our Blake Rapid Chelsea boots have the immediate flexibility and comfort of our sneakers, but can also be resoled when the time comes. Expect little-to-no break in time and an easy shape to the unique contours of your foot.
Epaulet Chelseas run true to size. If you typically wear a 10D in dress shoes, then we recommend ordering a US10 in these. For a comparison to our dress shoes, this size would correspond to a 10D in the Alden Aberdeen last, a 9.5D in the Alden Barrie or Tru-Balance last, and a 9UK in most Carmina lasts.
Many of our customers also tend to wear the same size in these as they would in a Converse Jack Purcell, which can be a useful comparison for getting fitted locally.
For European customers looking at the EU size, we also recommend purchasing your typical size.
These will break in and stretch in both the width and the height if needed. You should not size down as a result, but you can feel confident in the eventual fit if our trainers are a touch tight on your first try-on.
