Saphir Médaille d'Or
Saphir Cordovan Shoe Polish, 75 ml.

Saphir cordovan polish is an all-natural, beeswax-based polish with a high concentration of pigments perfect for the regular maintenance of your shell cordovan shoes.

Two major factors distinguish it from other polishes: the lack of turpentine and the inclusion of neatsfoot oil. These two differences make it specially formulated to meet the unique needs of cordovan leather.

Turpentine-based polishes should be avoided, or at least used minimally, when caring for shell cordovan because they soften the leather by expanding its pores. While this is appropriate conditioning for calfskin, it can be detrimental to cordovan, since the density of its fiber structure is exactly what gives it its distinctive characteristics. Heavy use of turpentine-based polishes can diminish cordovan’s natural strength, weather-resistance, and propensity for deep, beautiful creasing.

To avoid this, Saphir has replaced turpentine with neatsfoot as the active penetrative ingredient in its cordovan polish. Neatsfoot oil seeps into the grain, without dilating its pores, and thus keeps the leather smooth without compromising its structural integrity.

Saphir cordovan polish is available in four colors, which will match a variety cordovan shades. You can also combine polishes to match other colors. We recommend neutral polish for lighter shades, such as Saddle or Whiskey.

Despite what is written above, we still recommend the use of Saphir’s turpentine-based Pâte de Luxe polish as an accent for shell cordovan.  Applying a small amount of Pâte de Luxe wherever you want a high-gloss shine (e.g. the toe or heel), as a top-coat, will not impregnate the leather with enough turpentine to cause harm.
