The Wolverine 1000 Mile Boot collection is comprised of archival and reinterpreted classics from the 128 year history of the Rockford, Michigan based boot maker. Epaulet is proud to stock the cornerstone of this collection: the eponymous “1000 mile boot”.
First introduced in the early 1900′s, this “new” version of the classic 1000 Mile boot is still made in America out of genuine Horween chromexcel, features a single leather outsole, stacked leather heel and classic welt construction. Wolverine has taken meticulous measures to replicate their original's aesthetic, and we at Epaulet think they've done a terrific job.
Chromexcel is produced by Horween Leather in Chicago, a family-run tannery that dates back to 1905. It's produced using a bark retannage from a proprietary recipe, and then genuine hot stuffed with a blend of natural oils and greases. The resulting "pull-up" leather yields a rich, deep finish with very subtle shade variations. It breaks in easily, shines up brilliantly, and is incredibly long-lasting. The Chromexcel of your 1000 Mile boot will develop more character as it ages - month after month, and year after year.
The Goodyear welt is a method of attaching the sole of a shoe to the upper. Charles Goodyear Jr. introduced a machine to mechanize this step, and the process is his namesake. The Welt, is a strip of leather sewn onto the interface between the upper and the sole. Heavy stitching attaches the welt to both the top and bottom of the boot, increasing water resistance and ensuring that the sole is securely attached. The sturdy work sole is a combination of oil-resistant cork-filled neoprene with a thick industrial rubber heel. It's extremely comfortable and durable. The Goodyear Welt will allow you to easily and inexpensively replace the sole once it has been worn out (which will take a quite a while).
